Thermal Barrier Coatings (TBC)

IMPT have successfully demonstrated the use of their ESAVD technology for applying thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) such as YSZ (zirconium oxide stabilized with yttrium oxide) resulting the in the commercial process Layatherm™.

The coatings applied using the Layatherm™ process are equivalent to, or out perform, those produced by existing methods. IMPT have applied their TBC process technology to gas turbine blades for both aerospace and land based applications. The Layatherm™ process is particularly suited to such applications as turbine blades due to the ability to provide non-line-of-sight coating for 3D components and complex shapes.

Barrier Properties with the Layatherm™ process

  • Thick TBCs, stress-strain tolerant, columnar-like structures
  • Lower Thermal Conductivity than competing technologies
  • Thermal Shock Resistance – better than current methods
  • Good Erosion Resistance
  • High purity and adhesion

The Layatherm™ Advantages

  • Flexible non-vacuum process
  • Low-cost and environmentally friendly
  • Open atmosphere process – no need for sophisticated reactors or vacuum units
  • Non line-of-sight process – can coat complex 3D shaped components uniformly
